Vice President and General Counsel (1986 to 1989)
Privately held international trading company engaged in the purchase and global distribution of consumer and electronic products. Principal service areas included Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
Initiated, directed and managed substantive changes in regulatory compliance management and operations including “Know Your Customer” Profiles and Export Regulation Management, as well as Safety and Security Control Procedures for logistics operations.
Directed & Managed outside counsel in successfully resolving federal regulatory actions into compliance practices invovling export and import regulations.
Worcester Quality Foods, Inc., Worcester, Massachusetts
Director of Logistics (1985 to 1986)
Family owned full service wholesale distribution firm serving the fast-food industry in the New England and Middle Atlantic Regions. Directed and managed store door, back-haul operations, as well as full service maintenance facility. Controlled a budget of $2 million, 125 power and trucks, 185 refrigerated trailers, employing 150 people.
Implemented Activity Based Costing, reducing fleet operating costs by 20 cents per mile.
Revised loading operations reducing number of inter-warehouse transfers and improving on-time dispatch gaining 25% daily equipment utilization and reducing fleet costs by $175,000 annually.
Initiated comparative analysis of fix route operations planning against computerized route planning using Transportation Management Software.
Assistant Fleet Operations Manager (1983 to 1985)
Day-today- management of on-road operations, planning and executing back-hauls, on-road maintenance and safety reporting to the Director and coordinating with management of purchasing, customer service and warehousing. Extensive written and oral contact with drivers, service providers, regulators and customers on topics such as quality of service, accident and claim management, regulatory compliance, personnel issues.
Worked with Human Resources Manager to develop and implement standards for selection, training and retention of drivers. Opened communication with drivers by meetings and addressing concerns in writing and orally within 48 hours, quarterly newsletters, use of cards and personal contact to commemorate birthdays, anniversaries and bereavement. Drivers credit these efforts with greatly improved morale.
Designed and implemented a safety compliance program resulting in an upgrade of the fleet safety rating to Conditional from Unsatisfactory from the Motor Carrier Safety Administration (presently the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.). There was also a corresponding reduction of commercial motor vehicle accidents by over 80% and a reduction in insurance premiums.
